Many of our current MVCC students were too young to remember the 1992 LA Riots, but this was a frightening event in recent history. This site from Southern California Public Radio, The LA Riots 20 Years Later, documents the riots and their lasting impact. The causes and outcomes of the riots may make an interesting paper topic for COM 101 or 102.
