On Sunday, the film Twelve Years a Slave won the Best Picture Award at the 86th Annual Academy Awards. Based on the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, which tells his story as a man born free in New York, but who in 1841 was kidnapped and sold into slavery until being freed in 1853.
