Film Blog: William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996)

To continue on with the love theme, I’m bringing you an oldie, but a goodie. William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) is probably Shakespeare’s most famous tragic love story. The director, Baz Luhrmann, creates a highly stylized version of the play. Some of the characters’ names have been changed, but the original Shakespearean dialogue is still there. In the film, you’ll find a young Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained, Inception, and The Aviator) and Claire Danes (Temple Grandin)

If you like this film, you should also check out other films by Baz Luhrmann such as Strictly Ballroom (1992), Moulin Rouge! (2001), and Austrailia (2008). Baz Luhrmann is currently working with Leonardo DiCaprio on another film called The Great Gatsby. Two-time Academy Award winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge!) also designs with Lurhmann on this film, so you can be sure that the costumes will be fantastic.

As always, a trailer of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet is below.

If you’re curious, I’m including a trailer for The Great Gatsby, which comes out in May 10, 2013.
