Civil War Anniversary

Since we are talking about the US Civil War as part of our One Book Program, we wanted to share some important dates in Civil War history with everyone.

This week (March 25 – April 3, to be exact), marks almost 150 since the final battles of the Civil War between Generals Robert E Lee and Ulysses S Grant in and around Petersburg and Richmond, Va.
On March 25 and April 1, Lee attacked Grants forces, but was defeated in both attempts. On April 2, Lee and his Confederate troops abandoned Richmond, Va and on April 3, Union troops occupied the Confederate capital of Richmond. There were approximately 17,000 casualties.

A few days later, on April 9, Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Va.

These and other significant Civil War anniversaries are coming up in the next few months. Find out more about these battles, and other history of the Civil War, through the library’s resources.

Visit the One Book, One College Events page to see upcoming event information and listen to past events on the Civil War.
