In 2014, MVCC Police Chief Patrick O’Connor spoke in our library about safety issues including the College’s response and procedures on active shooters. His talk is informative and reassuring. It may be a good moment to share this video.
The Chicagoland area has a large and varied theatre scene with over 250 professional theatre companies calling Chicago and its suburbs home. Chicago leads the nation in world premiere productions annually, sending new works to Broadway, across the nation, and all over the world. Chicago Theatre Week has become an annual celebration of all of this.
Now in its sixth year, Chicago Theatre Week offers opportunities to see numerous theatre performances in the Chicago area at discounted ticket prices. It all starts this coming Thursday, February 8th and runs through Sunday, February 18th. Tickets will be priced at $30, $15 or sometimes even less, offering great opportunities to see amazing productions and visit venues that you may not have been to before.
Visit the Chicago Theatre Week website to see a complete listing and to purchase tickets for the 18 different shows, totaling 120 productions, that are being presented this year.
And don’t forget–The Fine and Performing Arts Center here at MVCC hosts a variety of wonderful productions throughout the year.
The American Writers Museum, 180 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, is a new entry in the local museum scene. A current exhibit celebrates the work of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Upcoming events include a discussion of the life and work of Lorraine Hansberry (Feb. 9) and Madeleine L’Engle (Feb. 11). Eve Ewing will discuss her book Electric Arches with poet José Olivarez on Feb. 13. See the website for more information about the museum and events.

Thank you to all of our students, staff, and faculty who came in to vote for our pumpkins! Your donations have helped raise over $500 for our student scholarship. The library staff is grateful for your generosity!
This year’s pumpkins were creative, thoughtful and great fun! We had 27 pumpkins from 13 departments, 11 students clubs/organizations, and 3 from individual students.
Congratulations to our 1st place pumpkin, “Wicked Witch” created by the Student Success Department.
Let’s be honest. We know the truth about the Library’s annual pumpkin contest. This is not about the best pumpkin. It is about your bank account. You want to win? It is easy. Buy votes. This contest has been going on for over a decade, and the winning pumpkin is always based on the student group, department, or individual who buys the most votes.
The proceeds go to our student scholarship. This is our primary fundraiser for the year, so come to the library and vote!
Voting ends Thursday October 26th at 9pm. Winners will be announced Friday, October 27th at 1pm.

Last year, for the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, we held a panel discussion with members of the MVCC community to remember and share. Many of our students where very young when the attack happened, so they do not have first hand memories of this day. We thought it was important to share our memories.
