Cataloger’s Shelf: Beastie Boys Video Anthology

When you think of Criterion Collection do you think of foreign movies like Adira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai or Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion? Or do you think of classic movies like Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps or Laurence Olivier’s Richard III? Or do you think of independent/art house movies like Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho? All of these are amazing movies which have received the Criterion Collection treatment over the years. Each is worth checking out and watching.

But now you have something else you can think of when you hear Criterion Collection. The library has just added The Beastie Boys Video Anthology to the collection, and it is pretty amazing, too. It gets the full Criterion Collection treatment. 18 music videos including Intergalactic, Sabotage, and Sure Shot, each with multiple video angles and remix audio tracks available. This 2-DVD set also includes audio commentary by the band and the video directors, including Tamra Davis, Spike Jonez, and Evan Bernard; still photographs; storyboards; and more.

Here’s the first video from the DVD, and one of my personal favorites.
