Around this time three years ago, as oil continued to spill into the Gulf of Mexico following the April explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, Congress convened for a series of hearings addressing the disaster’s impact.
You can now access several online transcripts of these hearings through the library’s catalog:
- Inquiry into the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Coast Oil Spill (May 12, 2010)
- Local Impact of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (June 7, 2010)
- The BP Oil Spill: Human Exposure and Environmental Fate. (June 10, 2010)
- The Role of BP in the Deepwater Horizon Explosion and Oil Spill (June 17, 2010)
The oil spill lasted 87 days with a total discharge estimated at 210 million US gallons. On May 24, 2010, NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of the spill.
